I didn’t agree with some of his policies, but I truly believe he wanted nothing less than the best for this country. I hope he’ll be remembered as the hero he was.

Copy pasting my comment from the thread about his family stopping cancer treatments. RIP.

“I wish him well. He is a exemplary man and a true War Hero , but I respected him a lotmore a few years back. Yes, he has pushed back a lot but for the most part he has only been “deeply concerned” about all the shit this administration has done and has continued to vote along party lines. Still, one of the better ones.

Also, no one should forget these disgraceful comments about him from the current White House:

https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/05/11/610325611/mccain-irrelevant-he-s-dying-anyway-white-house-official-reportedly-says

...and this draft-dodging coward.

During the presidential campaign in 2015, then-candidate Trump — who received multiple academic and medical deferments to avoid the draft during the Vietnam War — said McCain was only considered a war hero “because he was captured,” adding “I like people who weren’t captured.”

So, their condolences and #ThoughtsAndPrayers don’t mean shit.

RIP.  The Republican Party needs more people like him.  People with real experiences and real ideals, and real patriotism.

There were times when I thought he was a complete fuck, but I never doubted for a moment that he put country first when it came down to it, and it’s a bit depressing that he’s one of the last politicians you can say that about.

He was the last true republican as far as I’m concerned, apart from maybe Romney.

I’d definitely agree with that. I miss when I used to be able to think “yeah, I could vote Republican .” At this point, I don’t think there’s anyone I could actually support in any way.

Didn’t you hear? He was captured in Vietnam. We only like people who didn’t get captured, or had bone spurs.

I’m bitter to this day that he was saddled with Palin as a running mate. It spoke volumes to me about the party standing behind him and made what should have been a difficult vote easy for me to decide.

We could use more people like him on both sides of American politics, but he was unfortunately one of a kind.

Ugh I lived in Connecticut when Lieberman was senator. He’d sell out his best friend for a coupon for $2 off a large Dominos pizza (at menu price - only valid on Tuesdays) . He screwed over Connecticut to serve his own ambitions and saddled us with DHS. Gore was an idiot to pick him as a running mate, and McCain was smart enough to throw him to the curb.

If McCain had have picked someone other than Lieberman and Palin he would have been president. Hands down, no question. Could have just been some random person he pointed out in the crowd, as long as it wasn’t those two .

Not in ‘08 he wouldn’t have. I’m not necessarily going to say that no Republican could have beaten Obama in ‘08, but considering the political environment at the time and the shitshow that was Dubya’s administration, combined with the financial crisis...

It was a tall order.

Obama won with 365 electoral votes and a 7.2% margin in the popular vote. Palin, as terrible as she is, didn’t cost him that badly.

^^^None of that should be read as an insult to McCain, just pointing out the political realities.

At least he was Lawful Evil.

His service in a stupid, pointless war: laudable. His actions as one of the most powerful people in this country for the last three  decades, mostly in service of himself, but at least he had some principles, with I guess a few exceptions, well... it’s complicated. Some good. Some terrible. Not many of us have decisions of that magnitude on our table every morning

A complicated legacy, an undeniably human presence in American politics, and someone whose personal experience can’t be related to by anyone.

It was pretty obvious to me once the Palin talk started that he gave up and all but conceded. Perhaps he saw this kind of crazy coming down the pike, and figured Obama might have a shot at countering it, but who knows now.

I think with a stronger running mate it would have been substantially closer in the electoral college. We’ve seen the popular vote is not a good metric anymore... unfortunately.

Doesn’t change that McCain was a great patriot, and I think his role in ensuring the rule of law survived Trump is yet to be publicly known, but if we get through Cheeto-man with the U.S. intact, it will be in no small part a result of McCain’s behind the scenes work in the summer and fall of 2016.

The man refused an early release from the Hanoi Hilton after having both arms broken and being savagely beaten because he didn’t want to leave his men behind. Political ANYTHING aside, the man was a God damn American hero. I voted for him in ‘08, and I met a former Air  Force CMSgt who had been interred with him in Hanoi. Mr. McCain had a lot of fight in him and the Chief seemed to think that was why he was treated so poorly by the Vietcong. He's truly the last of his kind.
